Seattle, Washington

In its half century of history, Fred Hutch Cancer Center has established itself as a leader in innovative research for cancer and infectious diseases as well as expert cancer care.

Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit organization providing cancer care for adults and pursuing research discoveries to prevent, treat and cure cancer and infectious diseases worldwide. Based in Seattle, it’s the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Washington state.

Fred Hutch is globally recognized for scientific and clinical breakthroughs in cancer, infectious disease and basic research, with key advances in bone marrow transplantation, immunotherapy, HIV/AIDS prevention and COVID-19 vaccines. It’s home to three Nobel Prize winners including Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who led a team of Fred Hutch scientists to pioneer bone marrow transplantation as a treatment for previously incurable blood cancers.

Fred Hutch’s culture allows researchers to generate discoveries as quickly as possible and translate them into new treatments, diagnostic tools and preventive strategies. More than 400 researchers pursue scientific discovery in everything from basic science to disease areas across seven scientific divisions: Basic Sciences, Clinical Research, Human Biology, Public Health Sciences, Radiation Oncology, Translational Science and Therapeutics, and Vaccine and Infectious Disease. Its integrated research centers, institutes, networks and other cross-divisional programs foster a culture of collaboration. Today, Fred Hutch scientists are pursuing scientific developments in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer, HIV and other diseases.

Fred Hutch also serves as the cancer program for UW Medicine. Its unique relationship with UW Medicine provides an integrated model of care to better serve the community, region and beyond. This relationship offers the expertise of a renowned, independent cancer center with the comprehensive care services of a nationally ranked health system. With more than 650 health care providers, Fred Hutch can offer leading-edge cancer treatment options and clinical trials in advanced settings at its Seattle campus and regional locations.

Committed to education, Fred Hutch has a range of programs to train future scientific leaders and provide professional development opportunities for faculty. The education and training opportunities include educational programs for patients, providers and nurses, faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral and medical fellows, as well as internships and programs for secondary school teachers, and high school and undergraduate students. The Science Education Partnership has trained over 620 secondary school teachers in Washington, benefiting more than 15,000 students annually.

Additionally, Fred Hutch forms community partnerships to improve quality of life and address care gaps based on the unique needs of the regional community through education, prevention programs, and financial assistance. Notable initiatives include the həliʔil Program for tobacco cessation and lung cancer screening in tribal nations, and a Mammogram Van providing accessible cancer screening in Seattle.

Fred Hutch first opened its doors in 1975 as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with a sole focus on cancer research. It was established by local surgeon and physician Dr. Bill Hutchinson as a living memorial to his younger brother Fred, who died from cancer in 1964. The center partnered with UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s in 1998 to form the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), a separate nonprofit corporation that provided clinical oncology care for the three partner organizations for about 20 years. SCCA and Fred Hutch merged in 2022. Now the three organizations continue to collaborate on research through the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium.
