Cheryl L. Knott, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, as well as Co-Leader of the Population Science Program and Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal, Translational Behavioral Medicine.

Member Feature: Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center

Ali Ajrouch, MD, is a thoracic oncology post doctoral fellow at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Ajrouch's current research focuses on improving outcomes in lung cancer patients. This includes improving health disparity by increasing access to lung cancer screening and early detection, identifying factors delaying patient care, incorporating novel technologies to personalize treatments and understanding treatment side effects.

Member Feature: IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s efforts to End Lung Cancer Now

Since it’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month, I’d like to tell you about an initiative that we started at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer. It’s called End Lung Cancer Now, and we recently wrapped up what we called a “gathering.” The event included guest speakers from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Buffalo, N.Y.), St. Elizabeth Healthcare (Edgewood, Ky.), and Baptist Memorial Health Care (Memphis, Tenn.) and nearly 100 people who share the desire to end lung cancer—now.

Edward M. Greenfield, PhD, awarded $100,000 Kenneth and Verna Mae Jessen Award for metastatic osteosarcoma research proposal

November 19, 2022:

The Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium Foundation announces that Edward M. Greenfield, PhD, has been awarded the $100,000 Kenneth and Verna Mae Jessen Award.

Dr. Greenfield is a member of the tumor microenvironment and metastasis research program at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor of orthopaedic surgery at IU School of Medicine.

September 24, 2022:  Register now for the 2022 Big Ten CRC Summit held Saturday, November 19, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. We invite all senior/junior faculty and fellows involved in clinical oncology research, basic scientists involved in drug discovery and translational research, cancer center leadership and administration, community leaders and patient advocates to join us in Columbus at no cost for registration. Member Feature: Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center

September 13, 2022: The University of Nebraska Medical Center, along with its partner Nebraska Medicine, will have additional resources to aggressively pursue the development and testing of new therapies for pancreatic cancer following state support that was approved earlier this year. The state funding for the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium member included support for the UNMC Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence, led by Sunil Hingorani, MD, PhD, a highly accomplished and internationally recognized pancreatic cancer researcher and clinician. Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium establishes Kenneth and Verna Mae Jessen Award

July 13, 2022: The Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium recently established the Kenneth and Verna Mae Jessen Award after a generous donation of $100,000 from the Verna Mae Jessen Trust. The trust supports nonprofit organizations working in cancer or pain management research. The Kenneth and Verna Mae Jessen Award will provide funding for basic, correlative, clinical, or population science oncology research. Read More
